The 29th Baba Nyonya Convention @Phuket/Phang-nga
Dare To Dream Together
“Come and Share Our Peranakan Culture And Herritage Along The Andaman Coast”
We cordially invite you to the 29th Baba Nyonya Convention to be held during November 25 -27, 2016. After hosting the event in Phuket twice, this year, we decided to change the value of the Convention to be Takuapa, Phang Nga to offer you another aspect of Thai Baba’s culture. Takuapa, a small town locating just an hour from Phuket, shared a close tie to phuket Baba in terms of culture, relationship, and trading activities. However, the trading activities occurred not only between Phuket and Takuapa, but also in various towns along the coast via the Straits Steamship Matang.
Phuket Baba people owed a lot to the Straits Steamship Matang. This S.S.Matang would start its journey from Penang at noon time and arrive in Phuket at five o’clock the next morning. It carried lots of western products, machineries, processed meat and foods, and imported fruits to Phuket Town. After Phuket, she would go north to Ranong then make a stop in Tawei, Burma. It would unload cargo and reload the three main products from Mergui and Tawei. These three economical goods were tin ore, Para rubber sheet, and timber. On the way down, the S.S.Matang would stop for sacks of tin ore from Ranong and Takuapa. The ship not only created trading activities but also brought upon new ideas and civilization to us, Phuket Baba. That is why the route of S.S.Matang was so important to all the Hokkien Baba living along the coast of the Andaman sea.
During those days, Hokkien Baba merchants in Phuket and Takuapa would journey to Penang once a month to buy the goods to sell in their shops. They could also make friends with other Baba people from; Laemsak, the tip of the cape in Krabi, Canting in Trang, and Ranong. This was golden route for connections in those days for the prestigious Baba families. Unfortunately, the popularity of route faded away after the Second World War.
With all the importance of our Ka-ki-lang, who still preserve the Baba culture until this day, Phuket Baba Peranakan Association would like to introduce them to be known to all Baba Peranakan friends in this coming 29th Baba Nyonya Convention.
Luckily, we could provide you with the best seaside accommodation near the old town of Takuapa and not far from Phuket International Airport, – The SENTIDO Graceland Khaolak Resort and Spa.
We would love to invite all friends to came and enjoy yourselves at the most beautiful beach with lots of activities especially selected for, our Ka-ki-lang.
